  • UPDATE New EHIC now available to apply for online, for travel from January 1st 2021

You will need a new EHIC to travel to Europe from January 1st.

You can apply for the new card here: Get healthcare cover for travelling abroad - NHSBSA

Once you start your application, it will tell you if you are eligible and also invite you to add family members, such as spouses and children.

The old EHIC cards will no longer be valid from the January 1st, regardless of expiry date printed on the card.

Travel insurance is still highly recommended, as the EHIC only covers some emergency medical treatment or treament necessary for certain long-term conditions.

It does not cover any ancillary expenses incurred as a result of falling ill or having an accident abroad, for example, missed flights and expenses associated with extending your stay, including when a family member requires medical care abroad.
