I wanted to thank you for all your help in getting my citizenship application written and approved. I applied in December 2020, did my Biometrics in January and received a letter approving my application at the end of May. Brilliant!

I do have one question. I applied in 2020 specifically because I wanted to retain my German citizenship. I thought I could until I read in another forum that even though I applied before the 31st of December 2020, I would need to ask if I could retain it, otherwise it would simply be revoked because the UK is no longer in Europe? I can't really find anything about it on the Consular website - other than saying how it used to be before 2007 when you definitely did have to apply to retain it. Does anybody here know for certain how to proceed?

Actually that's not quite true, if you look here: German nationals

      ...you'll see:

Germans who wish to obtain citizenship of a non-EU country have to apply for a Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (permit to retain German citizenship) to avoid losing their German citizenship. If you are German, you need to make sure you apply for this before applying to become British.
The information below details the arrangement that were in place during the transition period.

Germany only allows dual citizenship with other EU countries.

You need to inform the German authorities after you get your ceremony and Naturalisation Certificate

See: German nationals after naturalisation - UKCEN Citizenship and Residence for European Nationals and their families

It is not possible to obtain a Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (BBG) for an EU country - this means that Germans who applied for UK citizenship before Brexit cannot obtain a BBG because the UK was still part of the EU, but they would have risked losing their German citizenship if they only finish the process after Brexit. In order to avoid this problem, new legislation was passed in Germany.
As can be seen above, it wasn't even possible to have applied for this permission.

The other post linked above explains what you need to do:
German nationals need to inform the Germany Embassy or Consulate about their British naturalisation. This can be done by email, without the need to make an appointment. You can provide a scan or photo of your Certificate of Naturalisation so they can file it in their system, you may want to check with them if they will need the original when renewing your German passport.

You can email them through the website, people dealing with the German Embassy in London can also use pass@lond.auswaertiges-amt.de.
