  • LAWYER RESPONSE Ceremony Timeframe - German national

    Hi All,

My Citizenship application has been approved and I am asked to book a ceremony appointment. The letter mentions that I have to attend the ceremony within 3 months of the date of the approval.

Any idea if I can potentially do the ceremony a bit later?

Reason for my question is that I am currently still waiting for a confirmation from the German authorities that I can keep my German citizenship as well. The confirmation is still outstanding and the German authorities say I must not accept the British citizenship until they say I can so, otherwise I loose the German citizenship automatically.

    Thank you!

    Morning,

When did you apply for British citizenship? I'm assuming it was after the end of 2020, as that was the deadline for German nationals to apply and have no issues retaining their German citizenship.

I'm not a German nationality specialist, but according to the info we had, German nationals wishing to apply after the end of the transition period had to obtain a Beibehaltungsgenehmigung before applying for British citizenship. Would you be able to clarify what happened here?

      Hi,

I applied for British citizenship 8th December, so pretty quick turnaround, much faster than expected.

Within the European Union, German citizens can have multiple citizenships of various EU countries. Due to Brexit, you need to apply for this Beibehaltungsgenehmigung with the German authorities which I did (by the way, French authorities do not demand such a request, you can still go ahead and ask for British citizenship in addition to your French one).

Now the question for me really is if the citizenship ceremony has to be done within 3 months from the approval?

      Many thanks

        Evening,

Yes, I'm aware of all that, most other countries do allow dual citizenship, although some do have complex rules. We had a lot of German members, but they all applied before the end of 2020 to avoid all this. That's why I was wondering.

if you contact your council they will be able to tell you the latest date that you can attend a ceremony based on when they receive your approval notice from the HO
