  • never received the citizenship ceremony invitation letter, certificate expired

    Hi!
I submitted my citizenship application back in April 2021, but I didn't hear back anything.
I was worried of course, but I also read around that sometimes (especially after Brexit and so on) application can take longer.

By chance, at the end of February I found out my council had an open ceremony invitation for me, but I couldn't attend it as I don't have the Home Office letter. While on the phone with my council, I asked what I could do and they told to chase the Home Office writing to the citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk email, also because my certificate is expired now, so i will have to get an extension!

I am trying to reach the Home Office, but I am not able by phone, and I wrote to any email I could find online trying to get hold of someone, but unsuccessfully. I am really not sure what to do, any advice would be welcome!

    Morning,

Citizenship applications have nothing whatsoever to do with EU membership, so leaving the EU had no effect whatsoever on them. Timings have always been very random, ranging from under a month to a couple of years, and everything in between.

From what I have seen, a number of our members were in a similar situation and just attended their ceremonies without the letter, since the council could only have booked a ceremony slot after receiving your certificate, so there's no need for a letter to prove your application was, in fact, successful.

I'm not sure what you mean about your certificate "expired", naturalisation certificates are for life, they don't have an expiry date on them.
