  • Success Renewal of British Passport in new married name has reached a stalemate due to non-accepted documents

Good morning! I've reached a stalemate with my British passport renewal to include my new married name. I (UK born and bred) am married to a Belgian national and we are living in Berlin. I have asked to renew passport in my new married name. It is currently in the name of my now deceased first husband. I sent an international marriage certificate issued by the Belgian town hall where we were married and I sent a QR code document (Huwelijksakte) that was supplied on request by the same town hall, my Familieboek. The British passport renewal service is not accepting any of these documents as proof of my marriage (the international format is not accepted since Jan 1st 2021) , whilst the Belgian town hall claims they have no other documents to supply and that the digital downloadable Huwelijksakte *is* the original. The PP examiner is saying this is unacceptable, it must be " the original document which is usually issued or held by the local municipal authority in the district where the marriage occurred". My post-Brexit residency appointment is looming large on the horizon. What to do? Two suggestions recently were to change my name by deed pool in the UK or go to the Belgian Embassy here in Berlin to have my marriage entered on page 4 of my passport in Flemish and in English. Any other suggestions would be very welcome!

UPDATE! I actually have just now received a personal phone call from the Passport examiner, who apologized on behalf of the Passport Office. The documents I submitted were, in fact, in order and they will be sending me my new passport in my new married name. Happy ending!
